Thimphu cabbies took the day off for a khuru match
Nyenpa Guzom
While Nyenpa Guzom or The Meeting Of Nine Evils is no more a national holiday, Bhutanese still refrained from doing 'important' work, given the belief that nothing good can be achieved on this inauspicious day.
axi drivers in Thimphu, however, decided to take a day off for a khuru (dart) tournament. |
In eastern Bhutan, Nyenpa Guzom is observed as a festive occasion to eat, tea and doma and play outdoor sports, like archery, dego and khuru.
While the day is also not considered good to travel, hundreds of devotees hired taxis, paying double the fare, and buses for Punakha to attend the Chakrasamvara (Dechhog Khorlo Dompai wang) blessing.
According to Bhutanese astrology, although there is an inauspicious day every month, the most inauspicious day falls on the 11th month of the Bhutanese calendar.
Legend has it that the demon couple of Pha Dorji Lokthreng and Ma Sasin Barma had one son and four daughters. The eldest brother, Rahula, and four sisters made a journey around a mountain, known as the Ri Gyalpo Rirab.Half way through the journey, they decided to take separate routes.
On the 7th day of the 11th month, Rahula met his sister Drogsing (eldest among the sisters), but he did not know they were siblings. They had an incestuous relationship, which led to the meeting of the nine evils. This, according to the dzongkha development authority’s national holidays’ handbook, was because the day on which the two had the incestuous relationship fell during the meeting of the nine evils, a day considered as the most inauspicious.
Nyenpa Guzom went off the national holiday list in 2007 together with Blessed rainy day but Blessed rainy day was reinstated in 2009.
