Mules in Bhutan
Bhutan
Breeding mules is proving to be a lucrative additional source of income for Radhi, Phongmey, Yangneer, Bidung, Merak and Sakten geogs in Trashigang dzongkhag. A cross between a mare and a donkey, mules are preferred to horses to carry loads because of their greater endurance and strength and ability to cover longer distances through difficult topography.

The farmers of the five geogs in Trashigang sell the mules for Nu. 15,000 to Nu. 30,000 for each to farmers in Dorokha, Samtse, Haa and Arunachal Pradesh, India

Dorokha and Haa villagers use the mules to carry orange and cardamom from the plantations to the markets in the towns. Most villages in these dzongkhags are not connected by motorable roads.
