Forestry
officials in Wangduephodrang arrested 17 people when they caught them illegally
collecting the popular herb, Yartsa Goenbub, (Cordyceps sinensis).
They had collected over 3,500 plants. They were arrested while they were
collecting the herb in Gangkar and Mayola under Wangduephodrang, and the
Dhur Tsachu area bordering Wangduephodrang and Bumthang.
The
Cordyceps is a rare species of plant widely used both in clinical medicine
and as a household remedy.

It
is also considered potent at strengthening lung and kidneys, increasing
energy and vitality, stopping hemorrhage, decreasing phlegm, and as an
overall tonic. A kilogramme of the caterpillar fungus is worth about Nu
30,000.

In

of traditional medicine (NITM) for the production of indigenous medicines.

The
Yartsa Goenbub falls under the Schedule I of the endangered and protected
species in the conservation act where it is given full protection. Collecting
the Cordyceps, is imprisoned for not less than three years or charged a
fine of up to Nu 50,000 or both in addition to the confiscation and compensation.
