After
receiving the award, on October 20, His Royal Highness told the gathering
of about 400 graduates and the faculty and students that the award carried
important symbolism. "It is a symbol of the goodwill that exists between
Bhutan and Canada and a tribute to the dedication and commitment of the
many Bhutanese who have studied at this university and returned to Bhutan
to work," he said. "It also signifies the university's unwavering commitment
in sharing the benefits of the education around the world."
In
his address during the convocation the university's president said that
the University of New Brunswick was deeply honoured to bestow the Honorary
degree on the Crown Prince, signifying the partnership between Bhutan and
the university.
Other

and the late Father William Mackey.
After
the convocation ceremony the board of governors of the university hosted
a lunch in honour of the Trongsa Penlop whose visit coincided with the

mostly educators, have graduated from the University of New Brunswick since
1985. The 33 Bhutanese students at the university were proud and happy
guests at the dinner.
During
his stay in Canada, from October 18 to 21, the Trongsa Penlop met with
the Honourable Bernard Lord, Premier of New Brunswick, speaker of the legislative
assembly, minister for justice and attorney general of New Brunswick, and
the mayor of the city of Fredericton.
