Three-on-Three Basketball Championship
Exhibition match in Thimphu
It was as though the men were wearing spring inside their knees, shooting a jumper, blocking a shot and rebounding with unusual drive and stamina.

There was a reason for displaying such verve at the ongoing three-on-three basketball championship that bounced off at the clock tower.

Outstanding players were going to be identified and selected to form the national team that will represent the country in the coming years.

In the first match of the tournament, in fact, there was no match as such, where Tertoen was awarded 33 baskets without having to play against its opponent, Delinquents, who failed to show up for the match.

In a similar manner, Usuals were also awarded 33 baskets in the second match, after its opponent team, Butt, conceded a walkover.

To fill in the gap the first two matches created for more than 100 spectators gathered at the clock tower, Tertons and Usuals played a friendly match.

Jaguars defeated Vastball 30-4 baskets, Shadows won Effects 33-28 and Gandhians scored 32 to beat Merlins with a basket.

In the women's category, Ravens hit 33 baskets to defeat Pamos, who managed only 18. The match is being played in a half court, where 21 men's and five women's teams are participating in the tournament.

Bhutan Basketball Federation's secretary general, Tokey Dorji, said he expected more teams to participate in the tournament.

"Usually, for basketball tournaments at swimming pool, we receive about 33 teams," he said. "It's not known whether the basketball players aren't interested to be selected as national level players."

Tokey Dorji said the federation officials would simultaneously be visiting schools to select potential players, who would in turn be groomed to represent the country in tournaments being held outside in the coming years.

The winning team for the ongoing tournament will participate in the first SAARC beach games, to be hosted in Sri Lanka this year.

Bhutan Basketball Federation, with support from Bhutan Olympic Committee and Thimphu City Corporation, organised the tournament.
