Archers Tshering
Choden and Tashi Peljor will be representing Bhutan in the 28th Olympiad
in Athens, Greece, from August 13-29, the first Olympic Games of the new
millennium.
For
Tashi Peljor it is his first time representing Bhutan at the Olympics and
for Tshering Chhoden, her second. She along with veteran, Jubzang, represented
Bhutan in the 2000 Olympiad in Sydney. Both were knocked out in the first
elimination round. |
The
elimination round of the archery event will be held from August 15 - 21.
In the first elimination round, 32 players out of the 64 will be eliminated
and in the second round 16 more will be eliminated. The elimination round
will continue till two players are left to battle for the gold and silver
medals. Two student athletes, Kunzang Chhoden and Sonam Tobgay will
be accompanying the archers to participate in the Olympic Youth Camp. The
two students will join students aged between 16-18 years from other Olympic
member countries during the Games. "It will be a cultural experience for
the two students," said Bhutan Olympic Committee Secretary General,
D.K. Chhetri.
The
president of the Bhutan Olympic committee, Lyonpo Thinley Gyamtsho will
be leading the Bhutanese delegation of athletes and officials to the Games.
There
are 202 International Olympic Committee (IOC) - recognised National Olympic
Committees and all member countries are expected to participate in the
first Olympiad of the new millennium. The 2004 Games also marks the return
of the Olympic Games to their birthplace, Athens, where the first Olympics
were held.
BOC
was recognised as a National Olympic Committee in November 1983 based on
a decision taken at the Executive Board Meeting held in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Bhutan participated in the Olympics for the first time in the 1984 Los
Angeles Games where three men and three women archers represented Bhutan.
