The Princess Ashi Dechen Wangmo Wangchuck
International award for Ashi Dechen Wangmo Wangchuck

Her Royal Highness Princess Ashi Dechen Wangmo Wangchuck (sister of the King) received an award for "Outstanding Women in Buddhism" at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok on March 7 in recognition for her service to needy people over the past 12 years.

Her Royal Highness is known to travel around the country, particularly in the remote areas, distributing clothing and blankets, food and shelter, and cash to individuals and communities, including the young, the elderly, and lay religious communities. She has also presented land to the government to be used for the benefit of low income communities.

A devout practitioner of Buddhism, Her Royal Highness has also supported the preservation of Bhutan's spiritual heritage, having helped renovate the Dobji Dzong in Haa, the Tama Lhakhang in Zhemgang, the Dorji Tse, Dordoen Goenpa and Pangtay in Bumthang, the Rue Goenpa and Taktsi in Trongsa, and has restored historic artwork around the country.

Her Royal Highness said that she has been able to continue her work with the needy people in unreached areas because of the help she has received from family and friends, particularly Her Royal Highness Ashi Deki Yangzom and Ugyen Rinzin and Karma Choden of Yangphel Adventure Travels.
