Tourists:
The Russian government has deplored the Maoist attack on
two of its citizens. Defying the Maoist blockade, the Russian tourists
were wounded after their vehicle hit a landmine planted by Maoist rebels
near Dolalghat , Sindhupalchowk district.

Road blockade:
The 11-day road blockade called by Maoist rebels to
protest against King's power grab ended yesterday. The army said it would
continue for escorting vehicles to prevent rebels attacks some time.

Emergency rule: King Gyanendra said the country was more peaceful after
he imposed an emergency more than two months ago to tackle a deadly Maoist
insurgency.

Gunbattles: A firefight took place at Dalphing in Rukum district.
Army troops killed about 60 rebels, an army spokesman said. There is no
information about the security forces' casualties.

Clash: Security forces clashes with Maoist rebels in Arghakhanchi
district. Four Maoists and three soldiers were shot dead during the incident.

Death toll: The death toll of Maoist rebels killed in the Khara
clash in Rukum district is still raising. The total number of dead
bodies found in the area is now 148.

Human Rights: A technical expert team from the Office of the
High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) arrived in Kathmandu to expedite
the setting up the offices of the United Nations (UN) rights body in the

split. CPN (M) headman Prachanda does not want to expel Bhattarai. He only
wants to control him. Bhattarai is also not in favour of launching a new
party."

party leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai. Issuing a statement , Prachanda said
that the party has taken action against Dr Bhattarai. The statement didn't

School Closures:
The All Nepal National Free Students' Union (Revolutionary)
ANISU-R urged private schools to close or else. In different parts of Nepal
schools did not open. In Kathmandu some schools members would ignore
the threat. In many areas schools are still on annual vacation.

Shut-down: A number of school groups, human rights activists and professional
groups urged the rebels to withdraw the shut-down.
»
Shut-down: The United Nations has also called for schools to be kept
free from the armed conflict. The UN, on the occasion of Nepali New year
2062, has urged warring factions in Nepal- the government and Maoist rebels-
to leave school premises and school children free from fear and disruption.

Human rights:
The representative of the UN General Secretary on the
Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) has said the UN was
gravely concerned over the current situation in Nepal and the situation
of the IDPs. According to reports, over 40,000 people have been internally
displaced due to conflict in Nepal.

Attack: Maoists attacked villages in Nawalparasi district , killed
at least ten villagers and destroyed several houses. The rebels had attacked
the villagers accusing them of being members of anti-Maoist 'resistance
group'.

Criminals:
Foreign observers express alarm at an influx of gunrunners,
drug barons and terrorists in Nepal.

No peace talks: "The rebels would soon come to power," CPN-M chairman
Prachanda said in an interview. The leader ruled out peace talks with the
present government. He said the Maoists would only consider talks if the
king withdrew his Feb. 1 proclamation and seizure of power.

Bombings: Suspected Maoists bombed the biggest school in Nepalgunj.
There is no report of casualties. Maoist rebels planted a bomb in a Primary
School at Khara area of Rukum district.

Lock out: About 200 villagers were displaced when Maoist rebels locked
out 34 houses in the Phidim area of Panchthar district. They warned all
the villagers having family members in army or police service against returning.
»
Inspection: A UN team has visited two conflicted-affected areas in
Dailekh and Kapilvastu districts. The UN team want to observe the human
rights situation in Nepal. |
