Thrangu
Rinpoche established Shree Mangal Dvip Boarding School in 1987,
with a view to providing an education for children from the Himalayas.
The students are both Tibetan and Nepali from the Himalayan region, but
they are Tibetan in terms of language, culture and philosophy, so apart
from offering these children a secular education, Shree Mangal Dvip Boarding
School also helps to preserve Tibetan Buddhism as well as the language
and the cultural identity of Himalayan peoples.
The
school population includes boys and girls as well as young nuns and monks
from Rinpoche's nunnery and monastery. Since they come from remote villages,
almost all lay students are boarders. The nuns and monks come as day students
returning to the nunnery and monastery at the end of each school day.
It
is valuable for the nuns and monks to attend school; first, their own lives
are improved by gaining an education. If they do not wish to continue with
their ordination when they reach adulthood, they have some means of survival:traditionally,
it is rare for the head of a monastery to offer an education to monks and
nuns as Thrangu Rinpoche does. Secondly, their presence in the school reinforces
the Buddhist identity of Shree Mangal Dvip and gives the other children
an ethical model - some of the regular students say they want to be ordained
when they grow up. |

| I'm
writing from Boudhanath, Kathmandu. I'm the director of a school for Himalayan
children (most come from the north of Nepal). The founder of our school
is a Tibetan lama, (tutor to HH. the 17th Karmapa).
We have 2 schools, one in Boudha, and one in Kavre district. The schools
offer free education to the poorest of the poor. As you know, the conflict
is making everything worse, particularly for the children.
Our support is entirely from overseas. Many of our sponsors are worried
about the safety and wellbeing of the children they sponsor in our schools.
It occurs to me that you people may like to have a look at our website www.himalayanchildren.org.
Our
designer who is in Canada just won an award for the design.
