Promoting Bhutanese culture through the national airline Druk Air
Winning Fabric: personal interpretation of Gross National Happiness through the use of random colours by Aum Karma Yangchen

Partners from the corporate and the development sectors in Bhutan have entered into a new venture to work together towards a shared vision of fulfilling the potential of Bhutanese weaving industry. This activity was jointly conceptualized by Druk Air and UNDP Bhutan, with assistance from The Textile Museum with the aim of bringing the corporate sector to participate in a development sector

and work towards enhancing income generation activities of the rural population in Bhutan.

In line with this, a hand-woven textile design competition was held in Thimphu on 17 March 2007 to select the best fabric for the uniforms of the national airline's female cabin crew. Some 18 pieces of hand-woven textiles were submitted for the competition. Speaking at the function, the Minister for Home and Cultural Affairs Lyonpo Jigmi Y Thinley who is also the Chairman of Druk Air said that the national carrier's uniform not only signifies Druk Air's corporate identity but has greater implication. Importantly, it represents Bhutan culture showcasing it to the world. He mentioned that the first impression of Bhutan that visitors to the country experience is through the air craft and also through the hospitality of the cabin crew.

Therefore, "choosing the best textile to dress the cabin crew will illustrate and introduce Bhutan's rich hand-woven culture to visitors", Lyonpo added. The panel of judges included Lyonpo Jigmi Y Thinley, and Design Director, Mr Tinnart Nisalak of Jim Thompson. Based on the winning textile (see photo), the next step is to identity a suitable uniform design for the female cabin crew through a national competition. The uniform will be designed and produced by the Bhutanese in line with the overall objective of promoting the Bhutanese weaving industry by providing a market for their products.
