The
Constituent Assembly elected Dr Ram Baran Yadav as the first President
of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, in a secret ballot.
General
Secretary of Nepali Congress Dr Yadav received 308 votes out of the 590
votes cast during the run-off polls, while his nearest rival Ramraja Prasad
Singh garnered 282 votes. The re-election was held on Monday after both
the candidates failed to garner sufficient votes on Sunday for simple majority
in the 601-member parliament.
Sixty-one-year-old
Yadav is a medical professional turned politician, from the Madhesi community
of the southern plains.
Paramananda
Jha of Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum was elected as Vice-President in the election
on Sunday, defeating Shanta Shrestha of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).
The
CA passed the Fifth Amendment to the Interim Constitution last week with
a provision of electing president, prime minister and CA chairperson with
a simple majority of the parliament.
According
to the CA/Parliamentary Secretariat, the 594 CA members were registered
to vote, as five seats are yet to be filled through bi-election and two
others who were nominated are yet to take oath of office. Four members
of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal boycotted the voting.
