The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal has urged the government and the Maoist leadership to clarify the state of hundreds of people who are missing in course of the decade-long armed conflict.

National Human Rights Commission says it has received 1,768 complaints of people disappeared by the security forces till second week of August 2006. Similarly, 750 complaints were filed in reference to people missing hands of the Maoists and 73 at the hands of unidentified people.

This also includes the cases of over 40 detainees tortured and disappeared from a Maharajgunj-based Army barracks in Kathmandu during 2003-04. The International Day of the Disappeared is an annual commemoration day created to draw attention to the fate of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives and/or legal representatives.

Earlier, the NHRC found the whereabouts of 1,205 people disappeared by the state, 435 by the Maoists and 15 by the unidentified group.
