January
22, 2003 Royal Wedding: Princess Prearana weds
Kumar Raj Bahadur Singh |
|
The
auspicious wedding of Her Royal Highness Princess Prearana Rajya Laxmi
Devi Shah was solemnised with Kumar Raj Bahadur Singh. The "Kanya Daan"-ceremony
of Princess Prearana was celebrated amid the chanting of vedic hymns at
Kathmandu's Narayanhity Royal Palace. "Kanya" meaning girl and dan
meaning giving away.
Vedic
traditions state that when the father gives his daughter's hand to his
son-in-law, "Kanya Daan", it is considered to be the most important ritual
of the whole ceremony. |
"
Kanya Daan" is a vedic ritual when the parents and relatives of the bride
wash the feet of the bride and groom. Queen Komal poured water on the feet
of the bride and groom in a 'jhari' or a jug. Crown Prince Paras, Crown
Princess Himani and Queen Mother Ratna also washed the feet of the bride
and groom. After "Kanya Daan", the bride is now the responsibility
of the groom.
The
baryatra (wedding procession) entered the Royal Palace, His Majesty Gyanendra
Bir Bikram Shah Dev received the groom at the Palace.
As
per Nepali tradition, the bridegroom is considered to have been accepted
once he is welcomed by the father of the bride, when the former arrives
at the bride's home, along with a procession of family members and neighbours.
Immediately after the arrival of the groom, he was escorted to the jagya
by the King.
The jagya is a place constructed especially for the performance
of the marriage ceremony, where the groom is worshipped by the bride's
father. It is during this ceremony named varani, that the bride's father
having met the bridegroom, is convinced of the latter's worthiness of being
the husband of his daughter. Purvanga was performed in accordance with
Vedic traditions at the Narayanhity Royal Palace. The task of bringing
saipata to the Royal Palace from the bridegroom's side, a ritual signifying
the finalisation of full consent on the marriage, also concluded.

2002 Nepal celebrates birth of a prince |
Crown
Princess Himani gave birth to a baby boy , providing Nepalwith
a second in line to the throne and giving the Himalayan kingdom a reason
to celebrate after one of the most turbulent periods in its history.
The government urged Nepalis to light candles to mark the birth of a grandson
for King Gyanendra. The birth resolved the question of a successor
for Crown Prince Paras, first in line to the throne in a kingdom
whose royal line passes through male heirs of the Shah dynasty. Under
Hindu tradition, babies are normally named on the 11th day after their
birth, so noname was announced.
