The sprawling 289 acre of land on which the Tala Hydropower Project Authority's (THPA) main office and other residential buildings stand in Gedu will house Bhutan's second degree college in the next two years.

The project's managing director, Mr. R N Khazanchi, said that the prevailing infrastructure would be handed over to the government in a 'phased manner'.

"We will hand over the first lot to the University by December next year," he said.

The main office complex, which previously housed the Gedu Wood Manufacturing Company, built in traditional style, has a central heating system, a conference hall and a library.

The residential colony has 358 apartments of various categories and a multi purpose hall that can seat 325 people.

The infrastructure is valued at about Nu. 690 million.

The RUB vice chancellor Dasho Zangley Drukpa said that the decision to take over the Tala colony was done in keeping with the National Assembly resolution.

The university will start a college of business studies at Gedu with the prevailing business courses such as B. Com and BBA (Bachelors in Business Administration) at Sherubtse to be transferred to the new college.

"The vacuum created at Sherubtse college with the transfer will help create more courses on humanities and social sciences like political sciences," said the vice chancellor.

The vice chancellor said that the University Council decided to set up a college of business studies at Gedu because Chukha was an economically vibrant dzongkhag.

"We will start the first session by June 2008, in time for the centenary celebration of monarchy in Bhutan," he said. "We have to convert some of the rooms into classrooms, laboratories and libraries," he said.

There was also the need to build a sports center with facilities for football, basketball, gymnastics and others.

Meanwhile, the Tala headquarter will be shifted to Arekha, which is about 35 kilometers from Gedu.

"It was decided to have the headquarter at Arekha since the operation and maintenance team would be near the powerhouse which is about five kilometers away," said Mr. R N Khazanch.
