"The
college in Gedu will offer courses in business administration (BBA) and
commerce (B.Com) to 480 students," according to the vice chancellor of
the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) Dasho Zangley Drukpa. "The business
courses in Sherubtse would be moved to the business college in Gedu and
create additional seats and courses in Sherubtse." |
|
The
RUB vice chancellor said that the first year and second year business students
of Sherubtse will be transferred to the Gedu College and Sherubtse will
take in around 600 to 700 students more arts and science students. "Sherubtse will have a curriculum focused on science, computer science, arts and humanity,"
he said.
Sonam
Peldon, a science student welcomed the news. "I think it is good news for
all of us nearing college education."
The
second college will be housed in the Tala Hydropower Project Authority's
(THPA) main office and other residential buildings in Gedu. According to
the vice chancellor, RUB and the department of education have had series
of meeting with THPA since August 2005 to work out a timeline for the handing-taking
over of the infrastructure.
"The
government has also provided Nu.130 million for creation of additional
facilities such as a dining hall, play ground, labs, library and to remodel
the offices in to classrooms," he said. "Everything will be ready next
year."
Bhutan
will also have its first private college in 2009. A Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) was signed by the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), Department of
Education and the promoter, Her Royal Highness Ashi Kezang Wangmo Wangchuck
on May 11 in Thimphu.
"RUB
is expanding but there is a need for private participation," said the vice
chancellor. "RUB is under a lot of pressure to increase its intake and
the number of students graduating high school is increasing every year."
The
first private college will accommodate around 300 students the first year
offering courses in Arts, Commerce, Business and Information Technology
said the vice chancellor.
The
college will be established in Nagbephu, under Chang gewog in Thimphu.
It will be located about 10 kilometres from the capital city. The construction
will begin in July this year and the college is expected to be operational
by July 2009.
According
to the vice chancellor, they had received applications and detailed project
proposals from three to four promoters.
Kuensel
talked to a number of class 12 students who said that having a private
college in the country would be convenient in a lot of ways. "We would
rather study inside the country if quality education is maintained, facilities
are okay and the teachers are good," said one student.
