"Antártida Educa": Spanish education and outreach programme rewarded

Breaking the Ice, a publication devoted to Antarctica, has won 1st place in the Science in Action competition.

Breaking the Ice is a magazine developed by the Education Department of the Embassy of Spain in Argentina, with guidance from the Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty. The magazine focuses on international cooperation and the protection of the Antarctic environment.

An initiative of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Science in Action competition is directed towards students, professors, researchers and educators of the scientific community, from any discipline. The presentation of the award will take place in Barcelona in October.

Breaking the Ice is the third issue in a magazine series entitled Tico and Tica. This series was developed as educational material for the programme "Antártida Educa", whose objective is to spread information about life in Antarctica to young people in Latin America. Breaking the Ice focuses on the Antarctic Treaty system, Antarctica’s unique features and daily life in Antarctica.

The "Antártida Educa" project

The objective of "Antártida Educa" is to educate young people about what Antarctica means for humanity. Since its start in 2010, the programme has provided lectures in schools, competitions, teacher training and educational material on Antarctica in schools in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Focus on Education and Outreach

During the last Antarctic Treaty Meeting (held in Brasilia in April-May 2014), the Parties to the Treaty agreed to hold a workshop on Antarctic education and outreach at the next Meeting in Bulgaria in 2015. The Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP), the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) offered their full support for the workshop and expressed their interest in participating, reiterating that education and outreach were important parts of their work.

More information on "Antártida Educa", including publications, educational materials, picture books and general resources, developed in collaboration with the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, can be found at www.antartidaeduca.com.

"Antarctica goes to School" is a project of the Department of Education of the Embassy of Spain in Argentina which has introduced Antarctica to more than 1000 students in public and private schools of different countries. "Antarctica Goes to School" provides a unique experience for all age levels in which students, while getting ready for an imaginary journey to Antarctica, discover the secrets of the southernmost part of the planet.

In 2011 a pilot project was taken to 18 schools in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay which allowed for the exchange of experiences between students and men and women stationed at Frei Station (Chile) and Esperanza Station (Argentina). "Antarctica goes to School" is a comprehensive project which, beyond piquing students’ interest in Antarctica and in the environment, also provides schools with specially designed educational materials for continued integration of these topics in the classroom.

Following the successful testing of the project, in 2012 and 2013 an environmental awareness campaign of national and international scope will be set in motion in collaboration with public and private institutions of different Latin American countries where Spanish is spoken, with the objective of integrating the project into these education systems. This awareness campaign includes the provision of free educational materials (already available for download from the project website and blog), teacher training workshops, presentations at national and international fairs, school lectures, and collaboration with Antarctic institutions.

Educational Materials

The project provides schools with a package of educational and pedagogical materials for use in the classroom. These materials, available on the website and the blog of the project, includes:

"Antarctica Educates" Book: Possibly the first Spanish language publication aimed at Antarctic education, and developed in the framework of international cooperation with specialists in Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Spain and Uruguay, and coordinated by the Department of Education of the Embassy of Spain in Argentina.

"Antarctica Goes to School" Guide: A pedagogical guide including exercises and activities to aid the integration of Antarctic education into different school subjects. This guide includes practical guidance for educators on how to bring book’s scientific information to life.

"Stories of Tico and Tica" Comic Book: A picture book in which two friendly huskies familiarize readers with Antarctica in a fun and engaging way. In the first part of what will ultimately be a saga, Tico and Tica take us on a "Great Adventure" ending in the conquest of the South Pole and the great exploration conducted by the legendary Amundsen and Scott.

Video and audiovisual material: The project has produced an educational video as well as various audiovisual materials to complement the educational content.

Interactive Game: A fun tool that allows students to play and learn at the same time.

These educational materials can be found on both the website and the blog of the project:
