Rebels cut links: Trucks and buses stayed off the major highway linking
the mountain-ringed the capital with the southern plains because of the
threat by Maoist rebels to attack vehicles defying the ban.

districts. At least two security personnel were killed while trying to
diffuse explosives planted by Maoists along Mahendranagar-Atariya Highway.

Pokhara: One policeman and two others were injured in a gun battle
that ensued between the security forces and Maoists at a police check post.

Taplejung: Maoists rebels kidnapped over 200 people travelling on three
passenger buses for defying the blockade. The buses were heading from Jhapa
to Taplejung. The Maoist took the abductees to an unknown place. They would
have to participate in the Maoist programme.

UN Help: UN resident coordinator in Nepal has said that UN help could
build trust in both sides to facilitate the resumption of the peace negotiations.

UN call: UN's Secretary General Kofi Annan has once again called for
end to fighting in Nepal, urges talks between Government and Maoist rebels.
With reports of an escalation in fighting and continued grave human rights
violations emanating from Nepal, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi
Annan called for a quick end to hostilities and the start of talks between
the Government and Maoist forces.

Rally for peace: More than 50,000 students, teachers, party activists,
rights workers and members of citizens' groups carried placards and shouted
slogans demanding an immediate end to the civil war. This is the first
time that all the sectors collectively showed their solidarity in the peace
rally to urge the warring sides for initiating the peace talks. |
