The Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha,
once a Maoist outfit, broke away from the parent organisation and began
a series of killings, abductions and extortions. The Morcha, which claims
to be fighting for the rights of the people in the plains who are ignored
in Nepal's administrative, judicial and military organisations, has called
a Terai closure from Jan 12, 2007. |

Arms monitoring:
UN arms monitors in Nepal
are beginning their work .

Training completed:
The 111 members of the Iterim Task Force (ITF)
comprising ex-Gurkha soldiers have completed their two-day training.
They received training from the UN officials, and representatives of Nepali
Army and Maoist army. The ITF members will be dispatched to the cantonment
sites to provide 24-hour presence at the weapons storage sites.

The ruling seven-party alliance SPA and the Maoists
agreed to promulgate the interim constitution on January 15, 2007. |

Interim Parliament:
Top leaders of the
four major political parties reached an agreement to share the remaining
48 seats in the interim legislature-parliament among the seven-party alliance
and the CPN-Maoist. According to the understanding , CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist
will get 10 seats each, Nepali Congress (Democratic) six, while Nepal Sadbhavana
Party (Anandi Devi), Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party, Janamorcha Nepal
and United Left Front will get three seats each out of the 48 seats, initially
allocated for civil society.

Gurkhas:
A team of Gurkhas who have recently retired have begun monitoring
the decommissioning of weapons held by Maoist rebels in Nepal.

Maoist senior leader Baburam Bhattarai said that
pro-monarchy forces are posing a big threat to the people and democracy

The Security Council backed Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon's call for the speedy deployment of a United Nations political
mission in Nepal to monitor the cantonment of weapons and help organize
elections for a constituent assembly after the recent peace accord between
the Government and Maoist rebels that ended a deadly decade-long war.

Reports coming from Dhangadhi district said
that Maoist kangaroo courts still functioning.
CPN (M) chairman Prachanda had dissolves all units of such courts and governments
earlier this week.

Reports from Kavre district said activists of the
Maoist-affiliated Nepal Hotel and Restaurant Workers'Association (NHRWA)
have padlocked nine hotels and resorts in Dhulikhel for an indefinite period.
