» Press freedom: Journalists still were threatened or brutally attacked by Maoists or Madhesi Janatantrik Forum (MJF) cadres in eastern and southeastern Nepal. Reporters Without Borders reiterated its deep concern about journalists in southern Nepal, where intercommunal rioting continues. Journalists have been forced to flee their towns, some media have temporarily stopped publishing, and press personnel have been attacked.

» Weapons registration: The Nepal Army (NA) has completed the registration and storage of its weapons.
Around 3,500 arms of the Nepal Army will be stored in 14 containers. Earlier United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) said that 3,100 Maoist combatants possessed around 3,500 arms.

» Long-term strategy: CPN (M) chairman Prachanda said  that his party would not give up its long-term strategy of "people's war." The Maoists only  had changed the model of "war" only. The Maoist party had not given up the political goal, the Maoists top leader added.

» Declaration of republic: CPN (M) chairman Prachanda said  that Nepalshould be declared a republic by interim parliament if constituent assembly election could not be held as scheduled.

The Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM-Goit faction) has issued threats of physical violence against reporters of Image Television and Image FM in response to their coverage of the recent abduction of a doctor and a government official from Rajbiraj, in Saptari district

» Violence: After visiting 50 of Nepal's 75 districts, the Carter Center's team reported 'unacceptable levels of continued fear, intimidation and physical violence' and 'disruptive activities' in the Terai plains in the south that were likely to prevent a credible election.

» Strike: The Samaj in Chure-Bhawar called a bandh (general strike) in the Terai region. Very few marketplaces and factories remain open in Siraha, Sarlahi, Sunsari, Bara, Udaypur, Rautahat, Dhanusha and Mahottari districts while transport services on the East-west Highway has been affected.
» Protests: Activists of Chure-Bhawar Pradesh Ekta Samaj this morning torched two buses of the Nepal Red Cross Society in Dhanusha district for 'defying' the indefinite bandh (shutdown strike) in the Chure-Bhawar region.
» Peace process: UN envoy hailed progress. One year after democracy and human rights demonstrators sparked a series of events that led Nepal to embark on a peace process, the senior United Nations envoy in Nepal said the determination of the country's people to ensure its success remains a cause for optimism.

» Strike: Indefinite bandh continues to paralyse daily life in Siraha, Saptari, Rautahat, Dhanusha, Sunsari, Morang, Sarlahi and Rautahat districts.
» Agitation: Senior Maoist leader B. Bhattarai said the Maoists would launch the third wave of indefinite peaceful agitation if republic is not announced by the third week of May.
» IDPs: Hundreds of thousands of people displaced from their homes during the decade-long war between Maoist rebels and the government are having difficulty returning to their homes, despite the conflict ending in November 2006, aid workers say.
