the police vehicle was hit by landmine planted by Maoist rebels in Rupandehi

Kalikot clash: Human rights group INSEC said in a statement that 27
RNA soldiers captured after that battle were safe in rebel custody. INSEC
expressed its concern about the treatment of these soldiers. INSEC called
the Maoist rebels to respect the Geneva Convention.

Kalikot captives: The spokeman of the Maoist Western Division said
in a press release that it has been keeping up with respectful and humanly
behaviour towards the prisoners of war captured after the clash of Kalikot.
CPN (M) leader Prachanda said in a statement that the reports about 40
captured RNA soldiers killed by the Maoists in cold-blood are totally false.
52 RNA soldiers are in Maoist detention. The rebels have released the names
of the captured soldiers and say they are being treated well.

Press freedom: The 12 international media groups that went on a joint
mission to Nepal in July have released a more comprehensive report on their
findings. The report, titled "The Defence of Press Freedoms and Freedom
of Expression in Nepal,"focuses on six issue areas: rights and free expression,
official harassment and detentions, media laws, censorship, and radio.

Collaboration: CPN (M) chairman Prachanda said in an interview that
collaboration between the seven party opposition alliance and the Maoists
would break ice of the existing trilateral power balance in the country.

Damage: EU mission in Kathmandu condemned Maoist attacks on industries
in Nepal. "The Maoist actions violate the human rights of workers and cause
great damage to the livelihoods of thousands of innocent people, their
families, and the overall economy of Nepal," said a joint statement issued

Kathmandu.

journalists reported that Maoists have raped over two-dozen women inSaptari
district. Threats from Maoists had forced tthe women and their realtives
to remain quiet about the crime. The Maoists denied the allegations.

in Salyan district. The Maoists forced the civilians to take part in their
"ideological" programmes.

rebels abducted two forest officers from Ilam district and five teachers
from Taplejung district.

of Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) said, "The WGEID regrets that families
